John Ferrie Gallery - October 1999
Bold, Bright, Colourful. Words that describe more than the eclectic collection of work from Vancouver artist, John Ferrie - they describe the man himself.
Known as the "bad boy" of Vancouver art scene, Ferrie has painted a place for himself in the international art world with a unique blend of exceptional talent and innovative business savvy. John Ferrie is truly a one man show. Ferrie represents himself and operates his own East Vancouver gallery, showing his work at least twice a year to the Vancouver market and at dozens of exhibits across the United States, Hong Kong, and France. Ferrie admits he was dragged, "kicking and screaming" into the global market of the world wide web, but within one week of launching his website, he had made three sales. Since then the John Ferrie Gallery website at www.johnferrie.com has become an ongoing exhibit of Ferrie's latest work, complete with relevant information on each piece and dates of upcoming shows.
Ferrie's unique styles blends recognizable images such of flowers or bowls of fruit with the less then familiar sight of drag queens and boxers; striking a cord of beauty in all of his work using colour and light. Ferrie says "If someone looks at my work and says, 'Wow, that's really beautiful!' I feel that I've connected and that's what's important to me." Ferrie's commitment to excellence goes far beyond style: he uses only high quality paints and canvases to ensure that longevity of each piece.
Despite his hectic schedule, this is one rebel with a cause. Ferrie donates his time and talent to numerous charitable organizations and events. you can see his work again this year on the Children's Hospital Christmas cards. Ferrie is also designing a corporate cyclist jersey for Sugoi to be laughed worldwide early next year with partial proceeds going to fund AIDS related organizations.
